GSR Workshop held in Bangladesh, 03 April 2012

A day-long workshop on “Introspection and Setting up Rice Research Priorities for Bangladesh” under Phase II of Green Super Rice Project was held on 03 April 2012 at BRAC, BRAC Centre, 75 Mohakhali, Dhaka 1212, Bangladesh.

The workshop was jointly organized by BRAC, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) and International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). The objectives of the workshop were:

  1.  To identify the significant achievements and areas where improvement is needed.
  2.  To encourage participation of rice stakeholders in setting up the research priorities for Bangladesh
  3.  To lay out strategies for GSR seed up-scaling and reaching out to resource poor farmers
  4.  To identify opportunities to maximize social impacts

Dr. M. A. Hamid Miah, consultant, Agriculture and Food Security Program (AFSP) of BRAC, Dr. Md. Syedul Islam, Director General of BRRI and Dr. Md. Zainul Abedin, IRRI Representative for Bangladesh were present in the workshop as Guest of Honour. Around 70 participants from BRRI, BRAC, IRRI, IRRI Bangladesh Office, Seed Companies, Seed Milers, Farmer representatives, extension workers, and researchers were present in the workshop.

Mr. Sudhir Chandra Nath, Program Head of AFSP, BRAC delivered the welcome speech and thanked the participants to attend the important workshop of Green Super Rice. Dr. Jauhar Ali, GSR Coordinator for Asia presented the overall objectives of the workshop and over view of the GSR Phase I activities and achievements. Dr. Md. Sirajul Islam, Program Head, AFSP, BRAC presented the GSR activities of BRAC in Phase I and Role in Phase II. Similarly Dr. Helal Uddin Ahmed, Chief Scientific Officer of BRRI presented the GSR activities of BRRI in Phase I and role in Phase II.

The participants were divided in to two groups for brain storming session. Group 1 discussed on Rice Research Priorities for Phase II under the leadership of Dr. Md. Shamsher Ali, Director (Research) of BRRI and Group 2 on GSR Seed up-scaling for Phase II under the leadership of Dr. Md. Khairul Bashar, Scientist of IRRI Bangladesh Office. The following recommendation came out from the group 1 discussion.

  1. Strengthening the role of GSR Coordinator for Bangladesh in Phase II
  2. Integration of multiple disciplines in GSR research and materials testing
  3. Creating multi-institutional monitoring team
  4. Making site specific breeding and hot spot screening of GSR materials
  5. Making shuttle breeding program with IRRI
  6. Development of Human Resources
  7. Arranging exchange visits
  8. Organizing national and international training

Group 2 put their concentration on releasing at least 1 inbred and 1 hybrid variety, and the variety for drought and salinity tolerance. They suggested for more awareness on hybrid and inbred of GSR through different types of media. They suggested for inbred seed multiplication through seed net of BRRI.

The dignitaries of the workshop opinioned on taking immediate steps to release the best identified GSR genotypes; specially the high saline tolerant and multiple stress tolerant GSR genotypes, since these type of varieties are very much needed for Bangladesh.

Finally the workshop was concluded by vote of thanks form Dr. Jibon Krishna Biswas, Director (Admin) of BRRI.
